Brigid Lela Griffin

SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Brigid Lela (Lynn) Griffin, 94, passed away at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in St. Paul's Retirement Center where she had resided the last several years. She had raised her family in Limerick, Ireland, and had formerly lived on North Francis Street in South Bend. Brigid was born on August 19, 1913, in Limerick City, Ireland, to Robert Emmet and Mary (O'Dwyer) Lynn.

 

On September 1, 1934, in Ireland, she married John Griffin. They moved their family to the United States in 1956. After nearly 65 years of marriage, he passed away on July 8, 1999. She was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers. Brigid worked as a cashier in the cafeteria at Saint Joseph Hospital for many years. Her hobbies included growing flowers in her garden, knitting and sewing for her family and for her church's bazaars. She also enjoyed making craft projects. Mrs. Griffin is survived by three daughters, Mary (Jack) Higgins of Lousiville, KY, G. Elizabeth (Frank) Kenny of Indianapolis, IN, and Helen (Keith) Olson of Fremont, IN; and by two sons, Sean G. (Bernadine) Griffin of Seattle, WA, and Gerard W. (Susan) Griffin of South Bend; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. John DeRiso, CSC, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road at Ironwood, where the Holy Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. Brigid was a member of St. Joseph Parish for 52 years and was an active member of The Altar Society, Harvest House and Circle of Mercy. She was a member of the Resurrection Choir of the church that sang for many funerals. Donations in her memory may be made to the Women's Care Center or to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
