Granger Crash Kills Edwardsburg Driver

Mrs. Elaine Jayne Grohowski, 44, of Rt. 2, Edwardsburg, was killed Thursday night when her car veered off Bittersweet Rd. and struck a pole, a quarter-mile south of the Indiana Toll Road overpass near Granger.

 Deputy Coroner Dr. Stanley Koscielski pronounced her dead at the scene of the wreck and said she died of a broken neck.

 County police said Mrs. Grohowski was driving her car north on Bittersweet at an estimated 65 miles an hour at 5:30 p.m.

Investigators said her car went out of control, jumped over a shallow ditch, and skidded 150 feet into a utility pole. It continued, striking a fence pole, and flipped end over end, landing on its top. Mrs. Grohowski remained inside the vehicle.

Police said the accident occurred three mile from the Grohowski home where she was headed at the time of the crash.

Mrs. Grohowski was born Dec. 22, 1926 in South Bend and had lived in Edwardsburg 11 years.

She had been an office employee of Uniroyal Inc. 10 years.

As Elaine J. Poznanski, on Sept. 2, 1950, she was married to John T. Grohowski, who survives, along with her mother, Mrs. Lottie Poznanski, of South Bend; two daughters, Sharon Sue and Lori Ann, both at home; and two sisters, Mrs. Esther Forycki and Mrs. Delores Rybak, both of South Bend.

 Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday in Kaniewski and Sons Funeral Home, South Bend.

Mrs. Grohowski was a member of the Women’s Club of Uniroyal and the Rosary Society of Our Lady of the Lake Church, Edwardsburg.
