John Welcome Gushwa

BREMEN - John Welcome Gushwa, 85, residing on Meadowlark Lane, Bremen, Ind., passed away at 7:22 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, in Highland's Regional Medical Center, Sebring, Fla., where he was wintering.

 

Mr. Gushwa was born on Dec. 30, 1912, in North Liberty, Ind., to the late Frank and Viola (Mangus) Gushwa, and had lived in Bremen for the past 50 years. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Roger in 1941; two sisters, Helen Hawblitzel and Hazel Metcalf; and by a brother, Glen Gushwa.

 

On June 27, 1936, in St. Joseph County, Ind., he married Lois Marie Eslinger. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lois; two daughters and their husbands, Elaine and Douglas Snyder, and Patsy Ann and Jeri Gurtner, all of Bremen; five grandchildren, Greg Gurtner, Troy Gurtner, Brent Snyder, Chris Snyder and Brenda Snyder; and by eight great-grandchildren.

 

Mr. Gushwa was self-employed in farming all of his life. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Bremen, and the LaPaz Lion's Club.

 

Services for John Gushwa will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, in Salem United Methodist Church, Bremen. Rev. Ralph Karstedt will officiate. Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery.

 

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday in the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan Street, Lakeville, Ind., and one hour prior to services on Saturday in the church. Contributions in memory of Mr. Gushwa may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church, Bremen.
