Mary Lou Hafner

SOUTH BEND - Mary Lou Hafner, 72, of East Angela Blvd., South Bend, Ind., died on Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, 1998 in Hospice House in South Bend after an extended illness. Mrs. Hafner was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. on March 15, 1925, to Louis and Marjorie (Dennis) Thomasma. She spent her early childhood in Grand Rapids. Mary Lou was a graduate of Howe High School in Indianapolis, Ind., and Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

 

On May 30, 1947 she married Roy L. Hafner of South Bend, who survives. She taught school in Indianapolis and Muskegon, Mich. In 1956, she moved with her family to South Bend. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #6 Auxiliary, Loyal Order of the Moose #58 Auxiliary and a volunteer worker for several charity organizations. Mrs. Hafner is survived by her daughter, Tondra of South Bend; sister-in-laws, Norma Lee Hafner of South Bend, Joan Norosz of Anaheim, Calif. and Eleanor Hafner of Mishawaka, Ind.; and brother-in-laws, Robert Hafner of San Francisco, Calif. and David Hafner of South Bend.

 

Friends called from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hickey Funeral Homes, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, on Thursday. Service will be 11 a.m. today in the funeral home with burial to follow in the Highland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hope Rescue Mission or the First Presbyterian Church in South Bend.
