Rev. Cornelius J. Hagerty, CSC

November 7, 1885August 4, 1977

 

Hagerty, Rev. Cornelius J. CSC, 92, who taught philosophy and religion at the University of Notre Dame for 35 years, died at 8:30am Thursday in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame.

 

Father Hagerty was born on November 7, 1885, in South Bend and entered Holy Cross Seminary in 1899.  He was ordained at Notre Dame in 1909.  He received a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in 1906 and earned his doctorate from Catholic University, Washington DC, in 1911.  Besides his work at Notre Dame, Father Hagerty taught at the University of Portland and St Edward’s University, Austin TX.  He also served as chaplain to the Holy Cross Brothers at Notre Dame before his retirement in 1960.

 

Surviving is a niece, Miss Margaret of South Bend.  Services will be at 10am Monday in the Moreau Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, with Rev. Leo A , retired bishop of Fort Wayne-South diocese, officiating.  Burial will be in the Community Cemetery, Notre Dame.

 

Friends may call after 2pm Sunday in Moreau Seminary, where a wake will be at 7:30pm Sunday.
