South Bend Tribune 2/20/2003

Brother Edward P. Hagus, C.S.C., 85, died in Dujarie House, Notre Dame, Ind., on Tuesday, Feb. 18, after a lengthy illness. He was a member of the South-West Province of the Brothers of Holy Cross. Born on Aug. 7, 1917, in Sacramento, Calif., he was the son of Andrew and Cecilia (Donovan) Hagus.

Br. Edward attended elementary schools in Sacramento, Calif., as well as the Christian Brothers High School in that city. He studied two years at Sacramento Jr. College, then completed a bachelor of science degree at the University of San Francisco in 1939. He served as an officer in the United States Navy in the Pacific theater from April 1942 until September 1946.

In 1947 he joined Holy Cross, and after his novitiate year at Rolling Prairie, Ind., made his first profession of vows on Feb. 2, 1948. He studied for an additional year at the University of Notre Dame, then taught for a year at St. Anthony High School, Long Beach, Calif. He was then assigned to St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas, as a teacher and Dean of Men. In 1959 he taught at Notre Dame High School in Biloxi, Miss., before taking on the role of Province Auditor, a position he held until 1971, working out of Notre Dame H.S. in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He then served on the staff of Rancho San Antonio boys' home, Chatsworth, Calif., until 1982, when he became assistant rector of Dillon Hall at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. From 1989 to 2001 he resided at Corby Hall at the university, serving as director of maintenance of vehicles for the large community of priests and brothers there.

Age and health prompted his retirement to Vincent Pieau Residence in Austin, Texas, in October 2001, from which he transferred to Dujarie House at Notre Dame in July 2002.

Steady, faithful and good-humored, Br. Edward was known throughout the community for his organizational skills and his expert bookkeeping. He was an outgoing man who truly enjoyed community life, regularly sponsoring and hosting gatherings for the Holy Cross communities in southern California.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, in the Dujarie House Chapel, the brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 933. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:45 a.m., with burial immediately afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds.
