South Bend Tribune 9/12/2002

Carol Rita Hamill, 58, died peacefully at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Regency Place, South Bend, Ind. Carol had been a resident of Regency Place since early August of this year. Carol had lived on Bently Lane, South Bend, until she moved into Regency Place. Carol was born in South Bend on Sept. 28, 1943. For many years Carol worked at Logan Industries, where her high fives, warm hugs and drop-in visits to the office of Logan staff endeared her to them. Carol loved helping with domestic activities in her home, assembling 1000-piece puzzles, and weaving. Her family recalls with pride the time she personally presented Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche, with a large mat she wove herself.

Carol's life has been a blessing in many ways. It inspired her parents to join with other parents of children with special needs to found Logan School, the predecessor institution to Logan Center. It brought fine and generous people, such as the Crafts and so many others, into the lives of the Hamill family. She taught her family about loving without holding back and unstinting caring for others.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Angela Hamill. She is survived by her sisters, Bridget, Ann, Irma and Angel; her nieces and nephews, Jessica and Luke Dabros, Rebecca, Rachel and Aaron Walker; and by grandnephews, Taggar Walker and Cade Mengalins.

A memorial Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Parish Center at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at Notre Dame, followed by interment at Notre Dame's Cedar Grove Cemetery. Sacred Heart Parish Center is past Moreau Seminary on Douglas Road, west of Juniper Road. A sign on the left identifies the location. Parking is available there. Donations may be made to "Friends of L'Arche," 53175 Osage Drive, South Bend, IN 46637. The St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, is handling funeral arrangements.
