Vera Gloria Hammes, 78, of South Main Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. Vera was born on Feb. 20, 1925, in Mishawaka, as the daughter of the late Albino and Leah (Lombardini) Capelli. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ada Capelli and Lydia Dentino; and by a brother, Leo Capelli.

 

On Sept. 18, 1954, in Mishawaka, as the former Vera Capelli, she married Charles Hammes, who survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Gloria (William) Griesinger of Westmont, Ill.; a son, Tony Hammes of Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Rachel and Benjamin Griesinger; and by a sister, Leda Di Fiori of South Bend.

 

Vera worked as a billing clerk for Uniroyal for 17 years before retiring in 1961. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, taught dancing at Peltz Music House, and was a baton twirler with Veterans of Foreign Wars and D.A.V. Chapter 6. Vera was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 29, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Robert Yast officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
