Joan I. Hammond, 70, of 51980 Fir Road, Granger, Ind., passed away at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. She was born Jan. 24, 1931, in Argos, Ind., to William A. and Mae Wolford Thomas, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Carol Thomas in 1941; and by a brother, Dale Thomas in 2000.

 

She retired in 1996 after 30 years of service in administrative offices of NIPSCO in South Bend and Mishawaka, Ind. She was a 1949 graduate of Rochester High School, Rochester.

 

On Sept. 10, 1950, in Rochester, Ind., she married Arlen Hammond, who survives at home. Surviving along with her loving husband of 50 years are two daughters, Tina Likes and husband, John of Mishawaka, and Teri Joy of Granger; six grandchildren, Stacy Likes, Shawn Likes, Tara Joy, Tianna Joy, Tonnya Joy and Trisha Joy; one great-grandson, Kyle Parker; and a brother, William A. Thomas and wife, Melissa of Beaverton, Ore.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Foster & Good Funeral Home, 128 W. 6th Street, Rochester, with Minister Edgar Erskine officiating. Burial will be at the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Rochester. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home, and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
