Charles A. Hammons

SOUTH BEND - Charles "Chuck" Hammons, 62, of South Bend, passed away after an extended illness at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, November 21st, in University Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind. Chuck was born on April 17, 1944, in South Bend, and was a lifetime resident of the Michiana area.

 

Mr. Hammons is survived by his mother, Maxine V. Hammons of South Bend; a son, Charles D. Hammons of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Barbara A. (Bill) Evans of Bullhead City, Arizona, and Sandra (Jim) Mason of Riverside, California; a brother, Paul F. Hammons of South Bend; and by his loving granddaughter, Alesha K. Hammons, whom he loved and cherished. Mr. Hammons was preceded in death by his father, Dee T. Hammons Sr. in 1978; a sister, Phyllis J. Hoviak in 1996; and by a brother, Dee T. Hammons Jr. in 1990. Chuck leaves behind a loving family and numerous friends he made in his life journey.

Mr. Hammons retired from the St. Joseph County Police Department and worked as a patrol sergeant for many years. He was also a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant. Mr. Hammons was a member of FOP Lodge #155, the DAV and the American Legion.

 

Chuck requested that he be cremated upon his death. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, November 26th, at 2 p.m. in Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until services. Rev. Don Neely will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled the arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy to the Hammons family.
