Dessie H. Hammons

Dessie H. Hammons, 91, residing on Liberty Drive, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 1 a.m., Tuesday, in her home, of natural causes. She was a homemaker. Dessie was born on Oct. 22, 1904, in Sullgent, Ala., to the late Robert and Jeanetta (Coleman) White. She had resided in this area since 1942, coming from Arkansas.

 

On April 20, 1920, in Gatman, Miss., she married George Hammons, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1980. Survivors include five daughters, Beatrice Berry and Pat Erickson, both of Michigan City, Ind., Elsie Bradley of South Bend, Ind., Millie Weaver of New Buffalo, Mich. and Gert Irby of Albuquerque, N.M.; 18 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren. A son, Lester Hammons, preceded his mother in death.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, in the Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Dessie was a member of Calvary Temple Church, and was well-known as ''the quilt lady.''
