Sister M. Bernarda Haney CSC

Sister M. Bernarda CSC, aged 78, for many years a member of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s College here, died in St. Joseph Hospital at 5 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. She had been ill six days with pneumonia.

 

Sister M. Bernarda was born as Johanna Haney Feb. 26, 1858 in Illinois. She entered St. Mary’s College July 22, 1874; received the holy habit Aug. 15, 1875 and made her profession Aug. 15, 1878. She was stationed in Ogden, Utah and in Morris, Ill., and returned to St. Mary’s 12 years ago. She was on duty until her illness a week ago.

 

Surviving Sister M. Bernarda are two brothers, Patrick Haney of St. Paul, Minn. And Will Haney of Roseland, this county; two sisters, Mrs. Angela O’Brien and Mrs. Mayme Sallows, both of Roseland; and several nieces and nephews. Three generations of the family have worked for St. Mary’s college, and two nephews, Harold and Bernard Haney of Roseland, are plumbers and electricians for the college.

A requiem mass for Sister M. Bernarda CSC, of St. Mary’s College, was sung at 5:30 o’clock this morning in the Chapel of Loretto on the college campus. Burial was in the Community Cemetery.
