Thomas Edward Haney Jr., 78, of Juniper Road, South Bend, Ind., died on the morning of Wednesday, June 19, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Tom was born on Sept. 28, 1923, in South Bend, to Thomas Edward Sr. and Minnie (Neupert) Haney, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Andrew Haney; and by a sister, Elizabeth Anne VanDenBorre.

 

On Oct. 21, 1950, Tom married Dorothy Elizabeth Balasa. They were married for 38 years until her death in January 1989. Tom graduated from Central High School and attended Butler University. Tom is a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from December 1942 to March 1946. Tom was a retired pipefitter and a 50-year member of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 172. He was a devoted Catholic and a member of Christ the King Parish for over 40 years. He was also a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Blinded Veterans Association.

Tom was a kind and loving father and grandfather.

 

He is survived by two sons and a daughter: Mark Haney of South Bend, Tim Haney of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Maureen Katz of Prairie Village, Kan. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Matthew, Lisa, Kim, Lauren, Allen and Kevin. Tom had a good sense of humor that will be dearly missed and will always be remembered.

 

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, in Christ the King Church, 52473 U.S. 31 (933) South Bend. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today, June 23, in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. A Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc.
