Sylvester T. Hanyzewski

Sylvester T. "Sal" Hanyzewski, 93, formerly of Garden Lane, South Bend, Ind., died at 3:28 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on Oct. 10, 1907, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Hanyzewski retired in 1971 from the Bendix Corporation.

 

On March 29, 1930, in Gary, Ind., he married Lucille Sojka, who preceded him in death on Sept. 22, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Casimer and Magdalina (Drews) Hanyzewski; and by a brother, Dennis Hanyzewski. He is survived by two sons, Duane (Laverne) Hanyzewski and Dennis (Beverly) Hanyzewski, both of South Bend; three grandchildren, Gayle (Jim) Landsman of Grand Haven, Mich., Douglas Hanyzewski of South Bend and Jill (Dan) Hanusin of Dyer, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Haley, Jordyn and Clay Landsman, and Brandon Hanusin; and by a sister, Clare Ridenour of South Bend.

 

Mr. Hanyzewski was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Pulaski Post #357, the Holy Name Society, and the Married Men's Club of St. Casimir Catholic Church. He was one of the first ushers at the Notre Dame games, and was a member of U.A.W. Local #9 Retirees.
