Fred E. Harman

June 25, 1923 - March 1, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Fred E. Harman, 84, of South Bend, passed away after an extended illness at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. Mr. Harman was born on June 25, 1923, in South Bend, and had resided in the Michiana area his lifetime.

 

On December 7, 1962, in South Bend, he married the former Evelyn A. Kuszmaul, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Barbara A. (Robert) Davis and Karen S. (Richard) Spaulding, both of South Bend, and Linda L. (Nicholas) Falletta of Granger; a son, James E. (Cathy) Harman of South Bend; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren whom he loved and cherished.

 

Fred was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps, and fought in the Burma-China-India Theater during the war. He was very proud to be a veteran and supported all veterans his entire life. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family dearly. He loved to be around his grandchildren. He loved NASCAR, ND football, and loved the Greene Twp. Community where he was raised and graduated from high school. He was a member of the American Legion Post 303, VFW Post 1167 and the Disabled American Veterans, DAV. The family request, in lieu of flowers: PLEASE make all memorial contributions to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 51900 Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN 46628; or to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Mr. Harman was a former member of the Centre Twp. Fire Department and former member of the Greene Twp. Lions Club. Fred was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and served the Lord well. He will be sadly missed by his loving family, his church family, and all who had the opportunity to know him during his life journey.

 

Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 5th, in Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Friends may call in the church one hour prior to services. Pastor Timothy Knauff will officiate and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Harman family.
