Mardell E. Hayes

SOUTH BEND - Mardell E. Hayes, 89, of South Bend, passed away at 1:29 a.m. Saturday March 20th in Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Hayes was born on May 1, 1920, in South Bend and resided in the area her lifetime. On September 20, 1940 as Mardell E. Colditz, she married Allen S. Hayes who preceded her in death on May 17, 1997. Mardell is survived by two daughters; Sheryl J. (Rob) Newman and Beverly J. (Leonard) Kaczmarek, both of South Bend. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter whom all she loved and cherished. Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her loving husband, a son, Elwood "Bud" Hayes; a sister, Marjorie M. King; and a brother, Elwood E. Colditz. Mardell loved sewing, cooking, canning, playing cards, spending time at the lake and being with her grandchildren. She was a devoted Christian, serving the Lord well. She was a lifetime member of the Ardmore Brethren Church. Mrs. Hayes was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her loving family, her church family and all who had the opportunity to know this wonderful lady during her life journey. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday March 23rd in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday March 24th in the Ardmore Brethren Church. Friends may call in the church one hour prior to service time. The family request that all memorial contributions be made to the Ardmore Brethren Church or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. The HANLEY & SONS "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extend its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Hayes family.
