Sister Mary Teresa Heineman CSC, 79, professor emeritus of English at St. Mary’s College died at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday in Saint Mary’s Convent, after a two-month illness. She was born Dec. 2, 1903 in Connorsville Ind., and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s on July 6, 1931. She was received as a novice on Jan. 6, 1932, and two years later made her first profession of vows. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s College and received her doctorate degree in journalism in 1927. In 1942 she received a master’s degree from the English department at Columbia University in New York. She taught at Bishop Noll High School in Hammond from 1934 to 1935before assignment to the English department at St. Mary’s College, where she served until 1968.

 

In 1968 she retired from teaching and served as local treasurer in St. Mary’s Convent until her recent illness. She served as chairman of the journalism department from 1946 to 1961, director of publicity from 1946 to 1951 and director of advertising from 1940 to 1968. She was faculty advisor of Static (newspaper) from 1946 to 1948 and 1949 to 1957, and the Blue Mantle (yearbook) from 1961 to 1968. Her avocations included photography and local history.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Our lady of Loretto Church with internment if Our lady of Peace Cemetery at St. Mary’s. Friends may call today until services at the St. Mary’s Convent Parlors, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today.
