South Bend Tribune 5/28/2006

Ethel (Nedderman) Heintzelman, Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of South Bend, died Saturday, May 20, in the community hospital after a short illness. Born in Indiana January 5, 1911, Mrs. Heintzelman attended South Bend schools and graduated from South Bend Central with the Class of 1927.

She married John R. "Rudy" Heintzelman, also Central '27, on September 10, 1933, at the Grace United Methodist Church. Despite his illness, the couple observed their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2005. The Heintzelmans lived exclusively in South Bend until 1954, when they began dividing their time between Indiana and Florida. Enthusiastic golfers, they were members of Morris Park Country Club, the South Bend Country Club, where Mrs. Heintzelman was President of the Women's Association, and the Signal Point in Niles. In Florida, they played, often with other South Bend friends, at Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach.

Though she devoted most of her time to her family, Mrs. Heintzelman was an active volunteer in community service groups. She was a leader in the women's group at Grace Church, serving at one time or another in every capacity, from building committee to worker at potluck suppers. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and another community sorority dedicated to civic projects. As a member of the South Bend Symphony Guild and the Art Association, she supported local arts organizations. Like many friends, the Heintzelmans enjoyed the social activities and dances of such groups as the Elks, Shoe and Slipper, and the Indian Club.

Mrs. Heintzelman headed a large family. Her husband, Rudy, and a daughter, Lynn H. Dee predeceased her. Surviving are three other daughters and their spouses, Cynthia and Donald Campbell, Marcia and John Connolly Jr., and Sheryl and R. Len Hill, as well as Marilyn and Matthew R. Dee. The Heintzelmans had nine grandchildren and 14 great- and step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service for family and friends in the Riverview Cemetery took place on Friday, May 26. The family requests that any memorial contributions be sent to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 700 Broadway, Suite 810, Denver, CO 80203 or the Chautauqua Foundation, P.O. Box 28, Chautauqua, NY 14722. McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
