Paul O. Helquist

A very loving father, Paul O. Helquist, passed away at age 90 on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the Saint Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. He most recently resided at Alterra Sterling House in South Bend. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., on July 24, 1911, to Andrew Helquist (Anders Danielsson) and Anna (Homman) Helquist, who emigrated from Mockfjrd, Sweden, in 1903. The Helquist family moved to Proctor, Minn., in 1915 where Paul graduated from Proctor High School in 1931. He worked for the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad for over 30 years as a locomotive engineer. He also worked as a motion picture projectionist and co-owned a movie theater in Proctor. In 1937 he married Marie E. Parent, who passed away in 1989. They lived in the Proctor area until her retirement when they moved to Pharr, Texas. Paul moved to South Bend in 1995 to be close to family members. Paul and Marie had a daughter, Emilie Ann Larson, who passed away in 1962. Paul is survived by a sister, Margaret Seekins of Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; a son, Paul M. Helquist of Granger, Ind., and another son, Frank J. Helquist of Birchwood, Wis., their wives, Christie (Wick) and Debra (Borg); a son-in-law, David C. Larson; six grandchildren, Denise (Larson) Smith, David Guy Larson, Sandra Helquist, Kristina Helquist, Anders Helquist and Anika Helquist; three great- grandchildren, Eric Smith, Tanya Smith and Jessica Larson; and by one great-great-grandson.

 

The funeral will be held at St. Rose Church in Proctor, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery in Duluth, Minn. Arrangements will be made by Bell Brothers Funeral Home in Duluth. Contributions may be made to the Proctor High School College Scholarship Fund.
