ELKHART -- Raymond "Ray" Heminger, 78, of 1400 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, Ind., died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the AmeriCare Living Center, Elkhart. He was formerly of State Road 19, Elkhart.

He was born May 25, 1925, in St. Joseph County, to the late James Walter and Hazel (Herbster) Heminger. He married Evelyn Crosby on July 18, 1970. She died July 21, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a son, David Heminger; four brothers, James Walter Jr. In 1941, Harold E. In 1947, Robert E. In 2000 and William L. In 2003.

Mr. Heminger is survived by three stepsons, Chester Downey of Walkerton, Ind., Leonard Downey of Spokane, Wash., and Raymond Downey of Walkerton; a sister, Dorthy Hollingsworth of Mishawaka, Ind.; and by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Heminger was in the Navy from 1942 to May 22, 1946. He worked for 20 years as a bread salesman for the Ward Baking Company, and retired from the recreational vehicle industry. He was a member of Winding Waters Brethren Church and the VFW, Elkhart.

Friends will be received from noon to 3 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 4, in the Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, where services will be at 3 p.m. Pastor Roger Eberly will officiate. Burial will be at Union Center Cemetery.
