South Bend Tribune 5/13/2008
SOUTH BEND - Marcille L. Hendricks, 80, of South Bend, passed away May 12, 2008, after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She had resided at Morningside Nursing and Memory Care Center since February 2008. She had remained in her own South Bend home until 2005, and then lived with her daughter, Cathie, and her son, David. Mrs. Hendricks was born in Mishawaka, IN, on April 21, 1928, to Hershall and Florence (Lytle) Larimer. She attended Beiger Elementary School and graduated from Mishawaka High School. She often spoke of happy times with cousins and friends. She attended Indiana University, Bloomington, for one year.

She married Jim E. Hendricks on August 30, 1947, at East Methodist Church in Mishawaka. He survives in South Bend. Marcille was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She supported her church in leadership and service, and shared her gifts in many church activities: United Methodist Women, mission trips to Haiti and other committees, commissions and boards. She loved her church and her church family. During the early 1970s, Marcille was a teacher in an Easter Seal Society classroom for pre-school handicapped children. Her association with the teachers, children and their parents was a very special experience that she referred to quite often in life. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 2, past advisory board member of the Indiana Order of Rainbow for Girls, Chapter 1, and past president of the Monroe Elementary PTO. Marcille loved traveling, playing bridge with her bridge pals, and eating out with her friends. Most of all, she loved her family and was devoted to each and every one of them. Spending time and interacting with her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren was always a top priority with her. Surely, if there were such a thing, she would have been awarded an honorary degree in "Grandmothering."

In addition to her husband, Jim, she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Hendricks, Edwardsburg, MI; three daughters and spouses, Vickie Irwin, Kendallville, Cathie and Roger Horein, South Bend, and Jan and Roy Vice, Palm Harbor, FL; 14 grandchildren and spouses, Jeannie Hendricks, Shawna Hendricks, Julie Hendricks, Andrew Hendricks, Kimberly Irwin, Indianapolis, Jim and Emmy Irwin, Noblesville, Kristen Irwin, West Lafayette, Erick Bastine, San Francisco, CA, Amy and Ryan Kring, South Bend, Greg and Heather Horein, Goshen, Rick Vice, San Diego, CA, John and Sarah (Whitney) Vice, Phoenix, AZ; special blessing caregiver, Katie Collins, South Bend; and 14 great-grandchildren, Katie Hendricks, Edwardsburg, MI, Amanda, Alex, Stephanie, Skyler, Gabe, Jessica, William and Michael, Benjamin, Alec and Baby Boy-to-be Irwin, and Brady and Carly Horein, Goshen. Her aunt, Beatrice (Knotts) Hendricks, survives in North Palm Beach, FL. Several cousins also survive in the Elkhart area. The family sincerely thanks the Home Care Team, Hospice of St. Joseph Hospital and all of our friends at Morningside who cared for Marcille with such love while preserving her dignity.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, with Keith Neely officiating. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, May 13, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Indiana, P.O. Box 4204, South Bend, IN 46634; or to the donor's choice.
