South Bend Tribune 1/27/2000

"Bill" died at 7:19 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2000, fighting the battle but losing the war to that terrible disease known as leukemia that has taken so many good people. Bill was born on April 23, 1927. He resided on Mayflower Road. He is survived by his daughter, Karyn (Daryl) Jones of South Bend; their sons, Brian and Anthony; a devoted friend and companion for many years, Richard Offerman of Dowagiac, Mich.; a brother, Kenneth Henke; and a sister, Joyce Humphrey, both of Edwardsburg, Mich.; sisters, Ruth Babiarz and Evelyn Shuppert, both of South Bend, Ind.; and a niece, Carolyn Shuppert of Phoenix, Ariz.

Bill was a veteran of World War II and was later employed by the former National Bank of South Bend for over 19 years, much of the time as the manager of the Western Avenue branch. In 1976 Bill opened a garden shop on U.S. 12 in Edwardsburg, Mich., which he enjoyed operating for 19 years before finally retiring in 1995.

As Bill requested there will be no formal service, and his cremated remains will be laid to rest in Sumption Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Hematology-Oncology, 10th floor, Memorial Hospital.
