Francis J. Henningfeld

Francis J. Henningfeld, 88, of St. Paul's Retirement and Healthcare Facility, died at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, in the facility. He was born on June 13, 1910, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Henrietta (Van Groll) and Francis W. Henningfeld, who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard W. Henningfeld.

 

On June 13, 1936, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, South Bend, he married M. Edna Barnett, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Susan (Henningfeld) Hentz of Crystal Lake, Ill.; two sons, Daniel G. (Kay) Henningfeld of Albany, Ga., and William F. (Pat) Henningfeld of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Brad Henningfeld, Tara Spivey, Shandra Hentz, Lisa Hentz Roller, Andrew, Christina, Katherine and Brent Henningfeld; and by five great-grandchildren. In 1972 Mr. Henningfeld retired as principal of Edison School, South Bend. Prior to that he was a principal at Linden School and had been a teacher at Adams and Central High Schools, and at Morris School for Crippled Children. After retirement Mr. Henningfeld became the interim director for the Family and Children Center in Mishawaka, Ind. Mr. Henningfeld was a 1933 graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he received his master's degree in 1935. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley, and the South Bend Optimist Club.

 

Services for Mr. Henningfeld will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 3, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 North William Street, South Bend. Rev. Mike Mathews, C.S.C., of St. Joseph Catholic Church will be the celebrant. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home. Entombment will take place in Riverview Mausoleum, South Bend. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana, 911 E. 86th Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240; or to the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County, United Health Services, 711 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617.
