SOUTH BEND - Lena L. Hertel, 95, residing in South Bend, passed away at 10:40 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, in Doctor's Hospital of Bremen. She was born August 30, 1912, in South Bend, and had lived in the South Bend-Lakeville areas all of her life. On October 8, 1948, in LaPorte, IN, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Hertel, who preceded her in death on December 7, 1999. She was also preceded by twins, Maxine in 1932 and Max Huston in 1952; another son, Alva Huston in 1960; and by two brothers, Theodore Whetstone and Walter Whetstone. Four daughters survive Mrs. Hertel, Patsy Jean (Brian) Korth of Mt. Clemens, MI, twins: Carol Kaye Wolteche of Olivehurst, CA, and Carolyn Faye White of Marysville, CA, and Ruth Ann (Dan) Thornton of Bremen; two sons, Donald (Barbara) Huston of Lakeville and Robert (Vickie) Huston of Nampa, ID. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Howard (Rosie) Whetstone of South Bend and Charles Junior (Isabelle) Whetstone of Mishawaka. There were fourteen 5th generations represented in Lena's family. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville, 314 South Michigan Street, Lakeville, IN. Rev. Greg D. Crump will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville.

Clemens, MI, and Carol Kaye Wolteche of Olivehurst, CA, Carolyn Faye White of Marysville, CA, and Ruth Ann Thornton of Bremen; sons, Donald Huston of Lakeville and Robert Huston of Nampa, ID; and brothers, Howard Whetstone of South Bend and Charles Junior Whetstone of Mishawaka. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
