Marguerite Violet Hertel

Marguerite Violet Hertel, 96, of Ironwood Drive, South Bend, died following an illness at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2006, in St. Paul's Retirement Community. Mrs. Hertel was born March 21, 1910, in South Bend, to the late Wilhelm and Eugenia (Clarquist) Hafstrom, and had lived in the South Bend area most of her life.

 

On July 2, 1936, in South Bend, as Marguerite V. Hafstrom, she married Arthur A. Hertel, who preceded her in death November 29, 2002. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Anderson and Thelma Dietrich Hunter; and by three brothers, Arthur, Rudolph and Carl Hafstrom.

She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn (Ron "Chuck") Tohulka; four grandchildren, Adam Tohulka, Tammy (Tom) Meuzelaar, Crystal (John) Moskwinski and Rhonda (Jeff) Johnson; and nine great-grandchildren, Deion, Zachary, Sean and Wesley Johnson, Randal, Joey and Timothy Workman, and Jacob and Makayla Meuzelaar.

 

Mrs. Hertel was a longtime member of Evangelical Covenant Church. She enjoyed sewing, ballroom dancing, ice skating, traveling, reminiscing with her photo albums, and bowling, which she did with the Elks bowling team. But her favorite hobby was playing with and enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. Kevin Brintnall of Evangelical Covenant Church officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, July 27, in the funeral home.
