Robert E. Hertel

Robert E. Hertel, 75 years old, residing on Roycroft Drive in South Bend, passed away at 11:10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 1999, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Hertel retired in 1983 from Torrington Corporation in South Bend after 18 years in the maintenance department. He was born on April 5, 1924, in Lakeville, to the late Lawrence and Lula (Clement) Hertel. Mr. Hertel has been a lifelong area resident.

 

On October 8, 1948, in LaPorte, IN, he married Lena L. Whetstone, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters: twins, Carol Kaye Wolteche of Olivehurst, CA, and Carolyn Faye White of Marysville, CA, and Ruth Ann Thornton of Bremen, IN; one stepdaughter, Patsy Jean Korth of Mount Clemons, MI; two stepsons, Don Huston of Lakeville and Bob Huston of Nampa, Idaho; 22 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Clara Beach of LaPorte, IN, Betty Sheneman of North Liberty and Gladys Hite of Plymouth; one brother, Carl Hertel of South Bend; and two stepbrothers, Virgil DeLanghe of Lakeville and Junior DeLanghe of New Carlisle, Ind. Two stepsons preceded in death, Max Huston in 1952 and Alva Huston in 1960. Mr. Hertel was a former member of the Lakeville United Methodist Church and a member of the Lakeville Conservation Club.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 10, 1999, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan Street, Lakeville. Rev. Greg D. Crump, pastor of Southside Church of God in South Bend, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday in the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville. Contributions in memory of Robert E. Hertel may be donated to the Hospice of St. Joseph County
