Clarissa Hickey

Mrs. Clarissa Hickey, wife of Eli Hickey, one of the pioneer residents of South Bend, she having lived here over 67 years, died at 508 E. Howard Street, this morning, as a result of an illness of one week, resulting from general debility. She was 75 years old.

 

Funeral services will be held from St. Joseph Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, Rev. Peter Lauth, CSC, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

 

The deceased enjoyed wide acquaintance in South Bend, especially among the older residents of the city. Coming here as a child nearly three-quarters of a century ago, she saw South Bend grow from an Indian trading post to a modern city. She was born Dec. 15, 1840 at Rochester, NY. Her marriage to Eli Hickey took place in the church at Notre Dame 56 years ago.

 

Besides her husband she is survived by the following children, George, Eli, Mrs. David Smith, Mrs. Affred Daveline, Mrs. Barrett and Mrs. Thomas Turnock of South Bend; Benjamin of Ohio, Mrs. Edward Welty of Michigan. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Mrs. Martha Reading of this city.
