Louis Hickey Dead at Age of 84 Years 

Friend of Pierre Navarre, Pioneer Settler 

Well Known Man Had Been Resident of South Bend for Over Half a Century 

Louis Hickey, aged 84 years, of 505 East Corby street, died last evening following an illness of one month. He is survived by his wife Mary; three children, Mrs. Charles Adelsberger, Mrs. Edward Davies and Elmer Davies [sic - Elmer Hickey], all of this city; two brothers, Eli, of this city, and Joseph of Holyoke, Mass; one sister Mrs. Adeline Martell of Willamsett, Mass. The deceased was born in Canada and had resided in this city for the past 64 years. The first seven months of his residence here Mr. Hickey lived with Pierre Navarre in the historical log cabin now located in Leeper Park. He was a member of the South Bend Fire Company No. 2 from 1869-76.

 

The funeral will be held from St. Joseph church Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock, Rev. Alexander Vorloky  officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.

“The funeral of Louis Hickey, who was one of South Bend’s foremost pioneers, was held this morning from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Alexander Vorloky officiating. Burial was in Cedar Grove cemetery. Mr. Hickey at one time lived in the historical log cabin which several years ago was moved from what is now Navarre place to Leeper Park, and which was erected for Pierre Navarre.”

 

Editor’s Note: Louis Hickey changed his name from Louis Etier to Louis Hickey sometime after his arrival in South Bend in 1848. His first wife was Julia La Fountain. His second wife was Mary La Fountain, the widow of William La Fountain.
