Sister M. Dolorosa Hipskind CSC

Sister M. Dolorosa (Katherine Anne Hipskind), CSC, 89, was born in Wabash, Ind., to the late Aloysius Hipskind and Mary Agnes Fleck Hipskind, the eighth of nine children. She is survived by one brother, Robert G. Hipskind, Wabash, Ind.; nephews, Ron Hipskind of Wabash, Ind., Rob Hipskind of Plymouth, Ind., and Nick (Sandy) Hipskind of Bloomington, Ind.; and nieces, Nancy (Gary) Beckley of Columbus, Ohio, Judie Frazier of Corbin, Ky., Jayne Ann Flynn of Lafayette, Ind., and Janet (Jack) Clisham of Chicago, Ill.; cousins, Rev. John L. Young, CSC, of Conn., Dorothy Brown of Ind., and Bill Orth of Ind., Bill and Mary Hipskind of Ariz., and Jack Hipskind of Ill., Rosalind Shovlin and Maureen Martin, SSJ, of Ind.; and many friends.

 

Sister Dolorosa received her early education in Indiana, Saint Mary's Academy and DePaul University, gaining her bachelor of music degree in 1953 and her master's of music, major organ, in 1957. She also gained postgraduate work at Pius X School of Music, New York.

 

After entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Sister Dolorosa taught music education in elementary schools in Indiana and Illinois beginning in 1937 and continued in secondary schools in 1941-1951. Sister then taught College Music Education at Saint Mary's College, 1953-1962, secondary music education at Schlarman High School, IL, and returned to Saint Mary's College for another nine years. After some time away from teaching music, Sister was chauffeur at Saint Angela Hall, Kensington, MD, and returned to Saint Mary's to assist with liturgy at Christ the King Parish, South Bend, IN. She then became active in the events at Saint Mary's convent, organist for liturgy, and was very busy with volunteer service to the community from 1985-1999. In 1999, Sister became a member of the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Reception of the Body: Thursday, May 5, 2005, 9:00 a.m., with Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
