Mary Frances Hiss

Mrs. Mary Frances Hiss, age 68, for 44 years a resident of South Bend and well-known in the eastern section of the city, died in her home, 715 East Cedar street, at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Her death followed five weeks’ illness of pneumonia.

She was born in Marshall county, Indiana, Nov. 6, 1861, and moved here from Plymouth, Ind. Her marriage to the late Joseph Hiss took place in that city.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Eva Gartner, of Mishawaka; seven children, John C. Hiss, councilman of the Fourth ward; and Frank Hiss, Mrs. Thomas L. Hickey, Mrs. Hobert Goheen and Miss Irene Hiss, all of South Bend; Ulrich Hiss, of Coral Gables, Fla., and Sister Ethelreda, of St. Mary’s Mercy hospital, Gary, Ind. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Clem Scheibelhut and Mrs. Albin Muinch, of Mishawaka, and 22 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock in St. Josephr’s [sic] Roman Catholic church with Rev. William P. Lennartz, C.S.C., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery. She was a member of the Altar society of St. Joseph’s church, and of the Royal Neighbors of America.
