EX-PASTOR OF ST. MONICA PARISH DIES

MISHAWAKA - Monsignor Leo A. Hoffmann, a former pastor of St. Monica Parish, in Mishawaka, died Sunday in Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was 86.

Monsignor Hoffmann was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest on June 10, 1933, in Fort Wayne.

 

He was appointed pastor of St. Monica in 1956 and served until 1970. He also served as pastor at churches in Wabash and Auburn during his 46-year career.

 

Monsignor Hoffmann was a diocesan consultor from 1963 though 1987. He retired in 1979 and became director of the diocesan benefit program for senior employees.

Surviving are two brothers, Monsignor Ralph Hoffmann of Chesterton and Floyd Hoffmann of Indianapolis.

 

A funeral Mass will be said at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Mungovan & Sons Memorial Chapel, Fort Wayne, is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Monsignor Leo A. Hoffmann, 86, died Sunday at Parkview Memorial Hospital. Born in Hartford City, he was a Fort Wayne resident.

 

He was ordained as a Catholic priest June 10, 1933, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He was appointed assistant pastor at St. Andrew Parish in 1933; he became chaplain at St. Joseph Academy in Tipton in 1939; he was named pastor at St. Bernard Parish in Wabash in 1940 and at St. Monica Parish, Mishawaka in 1956. He was Diocesan Consultor from 1963 to 1987. He was elected Domestic Prelate in 1964. In 1970, he was appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Auburn. He retired in 1979, and became director of the diocesan benefit program for senior employees.

 

Surviving are two brothers, the Rev. Monsignor Ralph Hoffmann of Chesterton and Floyd Hoffmann of Indianapolis.

 

Funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. today at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1120 S. Calhoun St., Fort Wayne. Friends called from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and a vigil was held at 7:30 p.m. Burial was in Catholic Cemetery.
