SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Dorothy Nell Forrest Howell received her wings at the age of 80 years old. She went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 13, in South Bend, Indiana after a short illness. Dorothy was born in Grenada, Mississippi to the union of Beard and Emma Lou Freeman-Forrest who both preceded her in death. Dorothy was a graduate of Riley High School of South Bend, Indiana. She later married Willie "Haywood" Howell in 1948, and they were married for 18 years before his death in 1966. To that union one son was born, Michael Haywood Howell. Dorothy received Christ at an early age. She was member of the First AME Zion Church and a life-time member of Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. Dorothy was very active as a volunteer in the community. She was on the Board of Directors at the Hansel Center. She worked the election polls and worked on several senior citizen committees throughout South Bend. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, card games, and cooking. She also was a long-term government employee, working in various departments. She retired from the Housing Authority of South Bend in 1991. Dorothy is preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Mack, James Albert, and William of South Bend; and three sisters, Ida Forrest-Harris of Berkeley, CA, Anna Forrest-Plump and Emma Doris Forrest-Carter of South Bend. Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories, one son, Michael Haywood Howell, his wife, Daphyne and one grandson, Nicholas of Los Angeles, CA; one godson, Howard Winston Buchanan and his wife, Mary; very special friends, Jeanette "Lue" Harris and Rosalie Hale; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends who loved her dearly. She will be truly missed.
