Larry Zane Howell

Larry Zane Howell, 69, residing on Irish Hills Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:35 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, in Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind., where he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 24, 1931, in South Bend, as the son of Elam and Bernice (Milliken) Howell. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Howell; and by a granddaughter, Callie Howell. He had been a lifelong resident of this area.

 

On March 31, 1951, in South Bend, he married Nila L. Sisk, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Vicky L. (Jon) Stickley-Freeman of South Bend; two sons, Larry Wayne (Candence) Howell and Steven E. Howell of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Ryan Stickley-Freeman, Shane Stickley-Freeman, Landon Howell, Cassidy Howell, Anna Howell, Michael Freeman and Adam Freeman; a sister, Linda (Wayne) Uglem of Sheboygan, Wis.; and by two brothers. Dean Howell of Monticello, Ind., and Ben (Pauline) Howell of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.

 

Mr. Howell was an employee of the former Studebaker Corporation, and was the former owner-operator of his own restaurant. He retired in 1993 from the recreational vehicle business where he was a partner in the Wynona Corporation, Nappanee, Ind. After retirement he was employed part time at Meijer's on Bremen Highway. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of South Bend where he served on several committees. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks and the Mishawaka High School Alumni Club.

 

Memorial services for Mr. Howell will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, in the First United Methodist Church, 333 North Main Street, South Bend. Rev. Daniel J. Berger will officiate. Cremation will take place, with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery at a future date. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 4, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Contributions in memory of Larry Z.
