Haven Hubbard

May 17, 1908 - March 15, 1999

Haven Hubbard, 90, a resident of Arkville, N.Y., passed away from natural causes on March 15, 1999, in Guay-ama, Puerto Rico. Haven and his wife Anne had va-cationed in Puerto Rico for the past three years during the winter months.

Haven was born on May 17, 1908, in South Bend, Ind., the second child of Arthur Lucius Hubbard and Mary Orth Ford Hubbard. His younger sister, Mary Chapleau, and his older brother, A. Lucius Hubbard, preceded him in death. The Hubbard family, descendants of the original colonist of the Massachusetts Bay Colony established 1632, were early settlers of Terra Coupee and New Carlisle.

Haven was raised as a Methodist and later became a practicing Unitarian. His formal education began at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. He received degrees from Harvard University, the University of Chicago, UCLA, and Columbia University in New York. Haven was a published writer and poet, and had been an actor. He was also a teacher for most of his life. His prolific and energetic writing led him to immortalize his rich and varied experiences in numerous plays, stories and poems. His last book, Morals in America, was published in 1998.

During his lifetime Haven traveled extensively around the world. In his twenties he hitchhiked by truck throughout Europe, Turkey, Afghanistan, India and China. He made two study trips to Russia, first as a student and then as a student mentor during the early days of communism. He traveled throughout the United States, the Caribbean and South Pacific.

During his lifetime he never lost sight of compassion and love for people, and the magnificence of nature. He was a gentle soul whose voice was only raised to make a stand for the oppressed of the world.

Haven, a loving husband, father and grandfather, is survived by his wife Anne, to whom he was married for 45 years. Haven is also survived by his son, Arthur M. Hubbard of San Francisco, Calif.; and his daughter, Marianne Wemette of Keesville, N.Y. Havens grandchildren, Christine and Michelle, are the daughters of Marianne and her husband Jerry. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Haven.

There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18, at the Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph County, South Bend, Ind., celebrating the lives of Haven and his brother Lucius. The ashes of Haven will be placed in the Hubbard family mausoleum at this time, beside those of Lucius. All who knew these gentlemen are cordially invited to attend the service.
