James A. Humphrey

Dec. 29, 1916 - Aug. 28, 2001

James Alexis Humphrey, "Speed the Candy Man," 84, has gone to Heaven to teach God how to make chaplain.

He was a very special husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

He has left behind his bride of 58 years, Margarita (Couch); nine very special children, Kathleen Hinnegan, James (Peg), Jeanne Wear, Robert (Dianne), Thomas, Therese, Joseph, Mary (Scott Pinkowski) and Michele (Pat McLaughlin); 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

BDJ was a lifelong resident of South Bend/Mishawaka with a two-year stay in China during World War II. He retired from the South Bend Fire Department after 20 years of service.

He was the last of the nine children of Aloysus and Edna Mae Humphrey.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Hospice or your favorite charity in Jim's name. He will be greatly missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the Notre Dame campus.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 30, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 289-1000, 3516 E. Jefferson Boulevard, where a Rosary will be said at 3 p.m.
