Herman L. Hums

Oct. 30, 1911 - April 23, 2000

Herman L. Hums, 88, of Ireland Trail, Mishawaka, Ind., died on Sunday, April 23, in Hospice House of St. Joseph County.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1911, in Mishawaka, to the late Adam and Katherine (Weinkauf) Hums. He was the ninth of nine children. Five sisters and three brothers preceded him in death, and they were Sister M. Avita, PHJC, Theresa Ernst, Dorothy Zimmerman, Anna and Margaret Hums, Paul, B.J. and Fred Hums.

On May 17, 1947, in St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, Herman married the former Anne Buranich, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Dr. Mary Hums of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Edward (Shirley) Hums of Mishawaka and Stephen (Janet) Hums of Lincoln, Neb.; and two grandchildren, Katherine and Timothy Hums, both of Lincoln.

Herman was a veteran of World War II with the rank of major, served with honor in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was stationed in India in the China-Burma-India war effort. He was on flights they flew over the Himalayan Mountains known as "the Hump," and into China and Burma. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as the assistant postmaster in the Mishawaka office. He was a licensed amateur radio operator for 63 years. He was a graduate of the former Jasper College Academy in Jasper, Ind., and was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 26, in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Thursday, April 27, in St. Joseph Church, with Father Robert A. Yast officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka.
