Louis P. Hums

Oct. 24, 1927 - March 21, 2006

Louis Paul “Louie” Hums, 78, of North State Street, Mishawaka, passed away in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after a short illness on March 21st.

Louis was born October 24, 1927, in Mishawaka, to Paul and Barbara (Roppelt) Hums, who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Carl Hums, and a sister-in-law, Marie Hums.

 

Louis had been a lifetime resident of this community. He also graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1945. He was an honorably discharged veteran, having served in the United States Army Security Agency in World War II. He served two different times, 1946-1947 and 1953-1956. In 1984 he retired from Associates Corporation of South Bend after 26 years of service. He was a member of Fitness USA for over 25 years. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka.

 

Surviving are three brothers, John Hums of South Bend, Albert and Larry Hums of Mishawaka. Also a sister-in-law, Rosemary Hums of Mishawaka; one aunt, Anne Hums of Mishawaka; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Louis was an avid Notre Dame fan and would often attend home games. He also loved to attend Mass at the Sacred Heart Basilica on the Notre Dame campus.

 

Visitation will be in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 West 8th Street, Mishawaka, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24th, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 25th, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Robert Yast officiating. Entombment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum, Mishawaka.

 

In lieu of flowers, all desired contributions may be made in his memory to St. Joseph Catholic Church or to the Heart Fund of St. Joseph County. Louis was a friend to everyone he met and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
