Brother Edmund Hunt, CSC, 95, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, South-

West Province, passed away at Dujarie House, Notre Dame, Indiana, on Sunday, July 24, 2005.

He was born in Elwood, Indiana. Brother Edmund lived as a brother of Holy Cross for 73 years.

 

A 1935 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Brother Edmund received a doctorate in classical languages at the University of Chicago in 1940 and later studied at the Sorbonne, Paris. Brother Edmund's long and masterful teaching career inspired his students at the University of Notre Dame, at St. Edward's University, and at several high schools of the Congregation of Holy Cross. From 1946-1952, as the first brother president of St. Edward's University, Brother Edmund set the Austin, Texas, institution on a course to become the second largest Holy Cross university in the country.

Brother Edmund's wise counsel served the Congregation of Holy Cross at every level of engagement, from personal mentoring to assisting with a rewriting of the congregation's constitutions. In his later years, he served at Rancho San Antonio, Chatsworth, California, and then lived in Austin, Texas.

 

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, in St. Joseph's Chapel, Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 933. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. with interment immediately afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds. A memorial service will be arranged in Austin, Texas, at a later date. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
