Albert E. Hunziker

MORTON, IL - Albert E. Hunziker, 80, of 226 N. Louisiana, Morton, IL, died from sudden cardiac complications at 11:55 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, in Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers, FL. Born September 22, 1929, in Peoria, to Albert M. and Helen (Sauder) Hunziker, he married Virginia M. Haerr on June 7, 1952, in Morton. She died on July 18, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Dale, in 2006. Surviving are three daughters, Janet (John) Schini of South Bend, IN, Jean (Doug) Greiner of Carlock and Peggy (Shon) Haerr of Taylor, MO; one son, Jeffery of Peoria; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Willis (Gloria) Hunziker, and two sisters, Mardell (Melvin) Plattner and Ardith Herrmann, all of Peoria. In 1951 Al graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in accounting and joined Caterpillar, Inc., in the accounting training program. He progressed through various financial positions, retiring in 2000 as Caterpillar Logistics Services, Inc. controller/treasurer after 50 years of service with the company. During the Korean War, he was appointed a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force, serving two years on active duty. He later taught mathematics at Bradley University night school. He was an Emeritus Life Associate and lifetime member of the Institute of Management Accountants, and served as a member and secretary of the Morton Police Pension Fund for over 20 years. In 1968 he was appointed a charter board member of the Apostolic Christian Home for the Handicapped (Timber Ridge) in Morton which established and operates long-term care facilities for disadvantaged persons. This agency now provides Christian care to over 150 people in nine separate facilities. Al was a dedicated member of the board for over 18 years, serving as secretary, vice president and president. Al was a born-again Christian, a member of the Morton Apostolic Christian Church and served in a number of capacities including Sunday school teacher, Adult Bible Class teacher, funeral usher, and was a member of the church choir. He was an active member of the "Mortonaires," a men's singing group at his church for over 40 years. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Morton Apostolic Christian Church, with church ministers officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at the Morton Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be at the Morton Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery. Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton is handling arrangements.
