Harold E. Hunziker

April 9, 1908 - Jan. 23, 1999

Harold E. Hunziker, 90, of St. Paul's Retirement Community passed away of natural causes early Saturday morning, Jan. 23.

Mr. Hunziker was born on April 9, 1908, in Kent City, Mich., and had lived in the Niles-South Bend area for over eighty years.

On. June 26, 1924, in Niles, Mich., Mr. Hunziker married Doris Eager.

A graduate of the University of Chicago, he devoted his career to M.J. Hunziker and Sons Landscape Nursery in Niles, Mich., which he operated with his brother, Alex. He received a Landscape Architect Honorary Designation Conferred by Michigan State University. In 1979, he completed Continuing Education work at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Mr. Hunziker was elected to The Hall of Fame-American Association of Nurserymen and to The Hall of Fame-National Landscape Association. In 1984, he wrote a series of Articles Titled ''60 years as a Landscape Nurserymen'' and lectured widely on the subject of landscaping. Mr. Hunziker was a Presbyterian Elder.

Mr. Hunziker is survived by his wife, Doris of South Bend, Ind.; two daughters, Anne Hunziker Assiff of Charlotte, Mich., and Karen Hunziker Thompson of Elmhurst, Ill.; a son, Kent Hamilton Hunziker of Bellefonte, Pa.; five grandchildren, Kim Tometich, Tracy Johns, Tamela Burkman, Tim Thompson, and Tony Thompson; eight great-grandchildren, James, Katie, Tim, Tyler, Trevor, Claire, Mary Kate, and Betsy. He is also survived by a brother, Lloyd Hunziker of Berkley, Calif.

Mr. Hunziker was preceded in death by a grandchild, Scott Hunziker; a sister, Margarite Hunziker; and by a brother, Alex Hunziker.

Services for Mr. Hunziker will be held at 1 p.m. today at Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend, IN, with the Rev. Tamela Burkman officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and one hour following services at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Retirement Community.
