Arthur Hurd

April 22, 1916 - April 16, 1999

Mr. Arthur Hurd, 82, loving husband, father and grandfather of Chalfant Street, South Bend, Ind., departed this life on Friday, April 16, after a short illness.

He was born to the union of Avery and Lavada (Owens) Hurd on April 22, 1916, in Tupelo, Miss. He was preceded in death by his parents, Avery and Lavada Hurd; and by his stepfather, Clarence ''Smoke'' Pierce.

After leaving Mississippi he moved to South Bend where he was united in Holy Matrimony to Margaret Jackson on July 7, 1957.

Arthur was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving duty in World War II, and was an active member of V.F.W. Post 9733. Arthur managed the family-owned business, Smokes/Flamingo, until it closed in 1967. He then became employed by the Dallas & Mavis Trucking Company, and retired in 1985. He was also a member of the Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Margaret; a daughter, Brenda (Michael) Mays, all of South Bend; two sons, Arthur ''Smokey'' Hurd, Jr., of Houston, Texas, and Clarence ''Moose'' (Sue) Hurd of Claremont, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Michael, Michele, Deborah, Michael, Marc, Sarah, Courtney and Jessica; seven great-grandchildren, Damien, Shantel, Alicia, Jasmine, Kimberly, Ashley and Taylor; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21, at Alford's Mortuary, with visitation occurring one hour before services.

Alford's Mortuary is in charge of handling arrangements.
