Al was born December 9, 1914, in Baker, Oregon, a son of the late Camiel and Emerance (Van de Wiele) Huys. In Baker, he attended St. Francis Academy and was recognized there as an excellent athlete. Following the tragic death of a little brother, the family moved to Mishawaka when Al was 15.

On October 1, 1938, in Mishawaka, he married the former Phyllis E. McFarland, and the couple made Mishawaka their home.

From 1942 to 1945, Al proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Ball Band in Mishawaka and in 1953 purchased Jordan's Mishawaka Transfer, Inc., and with his wife operated the business until selling to his nephew, Bill, in 1974. They then retired to Florida and returned to Mishawaka in 1995.

Al was a lifetime member of the BK Club and played on the BK football team at the time they were state champions. He also belonged to the Elks Lodge, and was an avid fisherman and golfer. He enjoyed gardening and shared his vegetables and fruits with others. Al loved spending time and doing things with his many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Al and Phyllis raised pedigree Collie show dogs. They traveled extensively, particularly to conventions for their business. Al and Phyllis went with others on many Notre Dame football trips. The couple also loved dancing.

On March 22nd of this year, Al lost the love of his life when Phyllis passed away following a long illness. They had been married for over 67 years. Al was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Knepper and Evona Hiler; and four brothers, William, Gerard, George and Frank Huys.

Al's surviving family includes his sister, Adelaine Windsor; a brother-in-law, Roy (Pauline) McFarland; his caregivers and nephews, Bill (JoAnn) Huys and Lon (Vicky) McFarland; and many other nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and great-great-nephews and nieces on both the Huys and McFarland sides of the family.
