SOUTH BEND – Leon. J. “Whitey” Huys, 67, of 2219 S. Lafayette Blvd., died Monday evening in Memorial Hospital after a year’s illness. He was born in Bellem, Belgium, on March 5, 1899. He had lived in South Bend for 46 years coming from Belgium in 1920. On Aug. 11, 1920 he married Paula M. VanDePutte, who survives. He retired from Studebaker Corporation in 1963. Also surviving are a son, Dr. George J. Huys, superintendent of Peen-Harrie-Madison Twp. Schools; three brothers, Marcel, Maurice and Gustaaf, and three sisters, Mary, Madelena and Martha, all of Belgium.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the DeVos Funeral Home in Mishawaka. Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Mishawaka
