SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE – December 4, 2001

Alyce Itow

Jan. 1, 1916 - Dec. 2, 2001

Mrs. Alyce Itow, 85, matriarch of the Doi clan, passed away quietly Sunday night, Dec. 2, in the Holy Cross Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in South Bend, Ind.

Born Alice Doi in Pasco, Wash., on Jan. 1, 1916, the daughter of Tomijiro and Ksen Doi, she married Takeshi "Tuggy" Itow on March 21, 1940. Alyce was a strong woman, living through the concentration camps of World War II, the loss of her husband in 1991, and recent health problems. She died quietly in her sleep Sunday night.

Alyce was very active in the Mish-a-Bend Duplicate Bridge club, and she and her husband owned and operated the Ralph Keller Concrete Construction Company for many years. She leaves many friends from those two groups. Surviving are her brother, George Doi of South Bend, Sam Doi of Osceola, Ind., and a sister, Mary Hiramatsu of Seattle, Wash. Alyce had no children, but she was a "mother" to many of the Doi family children and grandchildren. She had an impact on many lives.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home by pastor John Hall of the Willow Creek United Methodist Church in Mishawaka, Ind. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

When things were tough, she was always there.
When things were better, she was always fair.
When things were sad, she was always strong,
Now that she's gone, her spirit is with us all day long…
