Henry Jenkins

June 5, 1918 - Feb. 14, 2003

Mr. Henry Jenkins, 84, dear husband, father, grandfather and brother, who lived on West LaSalle Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed from this life following an illness at 9:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Henry, son of the late Henry and Louise (Shirley) Jenkins, was born in Cleveland, Miss., on June 5, 1918.

 

On Oct. 21, 1939, in Cleveland, he married Gracie Reid. Coming from Cleveland, they relocated to South Bend in 1953. Mr. Jenkins was employed as a butcher by the Gentner Packing Company where he retired after 30 years of service. Mr. Jenkins has left a loving family that includes his wife, Gracie; three daughters, Grace (Richard) Broadway and Valerie Jenkins, both of South Bend, and Colette (Darryl) Parker of Warren, Ohio; four sons, Henry Jenkins Jr., T. Floyd (Della) Jenkins, Willie C. Jenkins and Carl Jenkins, all of South Bend; 24 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Viola Burton, and a brother, Calvin Jenkins, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; a special friend, Jesse Walker of South Bend; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Those family members who have preceded him in death include his parents; four sisters, Pricilla Jenkins, Carrie Jenkins, Louise Willis and Henrietta Merritt; and four brothers, Robert Jenkins, George Jenkins, Revell Jenkins and William Jenkins.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Jenkins will be held at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 19, in Alford's Mortuary, with Bishop Stephen Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services. Arrangements have been entrusted with ALFORD'S MORTUARY.
