Philip Chester Johnson

Philip Chester Johnson, age 81, residing on Hildebrand Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away unexpectedly, early Thursday morning, January 9, in his home. He was born Aug. 28, 1921 in Fairbanks, Ind., as the son of Ara M. & Ruth (Pittman) Johnson, and has resided in South Bend for 52 years.

 

On Jan. 15, 1950, in St. John's Episcopal Church, Elkhart, Ind., he married H. Frances Diley who passed away June 17, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Carol Johnson on Dec.28, 1998. Mr. Johnson retired in 1989 as an engineer with Wells Aluminum Corp. in North Liberty, Ind. He was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, South Bend; a former member of Centre Township Lions Club, former member of St. Joseph Valley RC Club, and was a Past Advisor of Junior Achievement. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Air Force from Nov. 21, 1942 until Nov. 20, 1945. He was a 1947 graduate of Purdue University.

 

Mr. Johnson is survived by his son, Steven A. Johnson of South Bend; a cousin, Dennis Pittman of Fairbanks; a sister-in-law, Marian (Shannon) Clements of Goshen, Ind.; and a brother-in-law, Jack L. (Betty) Diley of Anderson, Ind.

 

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, in Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. James B. Miller, pastor of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 - 6 p.m. Sunday in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel. Memorial contributions in memory of Philip Chester Johnson may be offered to the American Cancer Society, 535 West Edison Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
