SOUTH BEND - Fr. Malcolm D. Johnson, C.S.C., 75, passed away on July 23rd at 1:30 a.m., in his residence in Santiago, Chile, after a five-month battle with cancer. Father Johnson was born to Malcolm and Lorena (Fischer) Johnson on July 31, 1932, in Adrian, MI. He entered Holy Cross Seminary as a freshman in high school in 1946, following graduation from St. Mary's Parish School in Adrian. He graduated in 1950, went to the novitiate that August and made his first vows on August 16, 1951. Returning to Notre Dame and Moreau Seminary, he graduated from the University in 1955, then studied theology at the Catholic University of Chile and was ordained in Santiago on April 5, 1959. Fr. Johnson spent his pastoral apprenticeship and three additional years as assistant pastor at San Roque Parish in Santiago. He then became assistant pastor (1964-1966) at St. Joseph's Parish, Kileen, Texas.

 

From 1966 until 1982, he was pastor of Las Rocas de Santo Domingo Parish in Chile. After which, he completed the program at Notre Dame's Institute for Clergy Education at Notre Dame. Fr. Johnson took on his duties in Chile, including nine years as Pastor of Andacollo Parish in Santiago and nine years as Pastor of San Roque Parish in Santiago. Fr. Johnson served as the steward of the Holy Cross Community in Chile for the past 20 years. He would be celebrating his 50th Jubilee in 2009. His 49 years as a priest and more than 50 years serving in Chile were dedicated to pastoral work in a number of parishes in Santiago, along the Pacific Coast, and in outlying areas of Santiago. He was dedicated to the pastoral life in the parish, liturgy and his biblical studies. He has been well respected and known for his Biblical Courses that were offered in a number of parishes throughout the years by the Archdiocese of Santiago, and neighboring Dioceses. A number of his courses have been published over the years by the Archdiocese of Santiago, the most recent one being just five months ago. Fr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm and Lorena Johnson; and a brother, Richard W. Johnson. He is survived by a sister, Karen A. Canaga; and a brother, Ronald W. Johnson.

 

A Vigil service and Mass was held on July 23, 2008, at San Roque Parish in Penalolen, Santiago, where he served as Pastor. The funeral Mass was held on Thursday, July 24 at the Parish of Nuestra Senora de Andacollo, also in Santiago, where he served as Pastor. Burial followed the funeral Mass.
