Obituary: George F. Jones

May 29, 1921 -- Sept. 7, 2004

                                        

George F. Jones, 83, of Finch Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.

George was born May 29, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., to Percy and Mae (Francis) Jones, who preceded him in death, along with a brother, Robert Jones, and his first wife of 25 years, Vivian Jones.

George is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Weinland Hildebrand Jones; daughters, Virginia (David) Kelleher, M.D., of Westfield, Ind., and Shirley A. Jones of Noblesville, Ind.; stepchildren, Mark (Teresa) Hildebrand of Carmel, Ind., Beth Ann Hildebrand of South Bend and Becky (Scott) Mahl of South Bend; along with three grandchildren, Brooke and Lindsey Hildebrand of Chicago, Ill., and Kaitlyn Mahl of South Bend.

George served as a link trainer instructor in World War II and then attended the University of Illinois, graduating with a degree in engineering. He worked as manager of the abrasive division at Wheelabrator Corporation until his retirement in 1980.

He loved the outdoors and he and Mary spent much of their retirement time at their camp in Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 10, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, Ind., where funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Michael Dixon officiating. Burial is to follow at the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Ind.
