Sister M. Magdala CSC, 81, long-time hospital administrator and former registrar of St. Mary’s College, died in St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after a long illness. Born Ellen Theresa Judge on March 15, 1886 in Seneca, Ill. she attended St. Angela’s Academy in Morris, Ill. and in 1905 entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross. She received the habit in 1906 and made her final profession of vows in 1911. In 1910 she graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing and at the time of her death was the oldest living graduate of the School of Nursing. In 1907 she received a certificate in pharmacy and served as a pharmacist at St. Joseph until 1911, when she was assigned to St. Mary’s College as secretary and registrar. She returned to hospital service in 1937 as superior of St. John’s Hospital, Anderson, Ind. and remained there until 1946, when she was assigned to Our Savior’s Hospital, Jacksonville, Ill. She became administrator and superior of Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus, Ohio in 1947, a post she held until 1951. After two years at St. Mary’s College she was assigned to St. Mary’s Hospital, Cairo, Ill. In 1954 she was named administrator and superior of Holy Cross Hospital, Jacksonville, Ill. In 1959 she was again assigned to St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend. For the past several years she has been a patient there. She is survived only by cousins. She was a first cousin of the late Sister Francis Jerome CSC, long associated with St. Mary’s College. Sister  Agnes Angela CSC of the campus school facility, is also her cousin.

 

The requiem mass will be offered in the Chapel of Our Lady of Loretto at St. Mary’s College, at 2 p.m. Thursday.
