Abraham L. Kahal

Abraham L. Kahal, 91, of South Bend, Ind., died after an illness on Sunday, Sept. 16, in his residence. He was born in Russia on March 8, 1910, to Max and Dora (Wolfson) Cohen, who have preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Rose Weingarten; and by his brother, Joseph Kahalnick. Abe arrived in America in 1922, and had lived in South Bend since 1925.

 

On April 20, 1947, in South Bend, he married the former Bertha Waller, who died on May 5, 1995. He is survived by his daughter, Ina Kahal of South Bend; a son, Edward (Marlene) Kahal of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Nora, Erin and Ben; a sister, Gertrude Cohen of South Bend; and by a brother, Julius (Bertha) Cohen of Laguna Hills, Calif.

 

Abe retired in 1985 after 30 years of service from the former Jack Frost Company. After his retirement Abe served as a Torah reader for Sinai Synagogue until April 1999. Abe was a member of Sinai Synagogue, the Jewish War Veterans, and was a 1930 salutatorian graduate from South Bend High School. He was a World War II Army veteran.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Kahal will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 20, in Sinai Synagogue. Burial will follow at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. Rabbi Michael Friedland will officiate.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Sinai Synagogue, to Hospice of St. Joseph County, or to the Rabbi Naftali Riff Yeshiva.
